Traveling for business doesn’t have to be hard work. With the right pre-trip prep, you’ll be able to save money, time, and your precious sanity – and you might even end up enjoying your time away! Turn your corporate stay into a carefree getaway with these top tips for a smooth business trip.

Business Travel Tip #1: Pack Like a Pro

When you’re heading out on a business trip, you need to pack light and pack smart. Packing like a pro means planning out exactly what you’ll need ahead of time. Pick your outfits for each day you’re away and try to choose pieces that you can get double-wear out of so you pack less. Create your little travel kit with the essentials you’ll need for everyday life and emergencies, such as spare phone chargers, power adapters (especially necessary for international travelers), headphones, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a razor, Tylenol, and band-aids. Keep this little wonder-kit in your suitcase permanently so you can rest assured you’ll never forget the important stuff.

Business Travel Tip #2: Carry-on Only

If you take heed of the above pointers, you should find yourself packing only the bare necessities for your trip. Fortunately, the bare essentials almost always fit into a neat carry-on sized bag! Not only does taking just carry-on luggage to save you from expensive baggage fees, but you’ll also avoid wasting time checking in luggage, waiting for its arrival at the carousel, or worrying about late or lost items. Be sure to invest in a carry-on bag with wheels, because lugging a duffel bag or backpack from one side of the airport to the other is never a good time.

Business Travel Tip #3: Stay Charged

In a world where we’re always connected via our laptops, tablets, and smartphones, an external battery pack should be your new best friend on business trips. When you’re working on the road or trying to prepare for important meetings ahead in your new destination, you don’t want to be caught short with your laptop or tablet battery dying mid-flight.

Business Travel Tip #4: Save Money, Use Public Transport

Calgary International Airport is located just 20 minutes from Downtown, and if you don’t want to splurge on a taxi, there are plenty of inexpensive and convenient options to get you where you need to go. Calgary is home to an extremely efficient and easy-to-use public transit system, which includes the C-Train. From the airport, catch the Calgary Transit Bus 100 to the McKnight-Westwinds train station, and jump on a train heading into Downtown. Once Downtown, the C-Train offers a ‘fare-free zone,’ so you can travel for free between the 10th Street and City Hall Stations.

Business Travel Tip #5: Choose Your Accommodation Wisely

When selecting accommodation for your corporate stay, you want to choose a location that’s both convenient to where you’ll be conducting most of your meetings or conferences, but also close enough to Downtown so you can enjoy your downtime. Urban Suites offer a range of beautiful and affordable short and long-term rental apartments (link to executive suites page] right in the heart of Downtown Calgary, ideally located to mix business and pleasure.

Business Travel Tip #6. Take the Plus15

Thanks to Calgary’s iconic Plus15 pedestrian system, getting around Downtown has never been easier. Standing 15 feet above street level, this climate-controlled network of walkways links businesses, shopping districts, and parking lots within the city. The Plus15 provides a handy escape from city traffic, as well as a much-needed refuge from the blustery cold temperatures during the winter months. Find out more about getting around Calgary and the Plus15 here.

Business Travel Tip #7: Soak up the local scene

Traveling to Calgary on business certainly doesn’t need to be all work and no play. Even if you’re short on time, all it takes is a little bit of research before you go and you’ll be able to see much more of Calgary than the inside of meeting and conference rooms. Downtown Calgary boasts a bounty of great bars and restaurants, museums, art galleries, and retail options – all within walking distance. You can even add a little Calgary culture to your lunch break and check out the Lunchbox Theatre, where you can order and eat your lunch in the theatre while taking in a one-act play.

Business Travel Tip #8: Turn your Business Trip Into a Mini-Vacation

Business and pleasure come together quite quickly in Calgary. Try to plan your business trip on a Thursday or Friday and stay the weekend so you can enjoy all the best the region has to offer. Often called the ‘Gateway to the Canadian Rockies,’ Calgary is also only a short yet scenic drive to the stunning Banff National Park, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Banff is close enough to take a day trip from Calgary, and a visit there will undoubtedly turn your ordinary corporate stay into an extraordinary one.

Business Travel Tip #9: Take Care of Yourself

Life on the road can leave you feeling sluggish, but it’s important to make time to exercise. A workout may be the last thing on your mind when you’re already feeling drained, but even a quick 30 minutes will have you feeling refreshed and energized with a healthy boost of good endorphins. Fortunately, Calgary is home to the most extensive network of walkways and bikeways in North America, which all conveniently weave throughout Downtown – so there’s no excuse not to hit the pavement and get your heart pumping. Whether you want to work up a sweat on a quick run or get some fresh air, Calgary’s scenic pathways will provide an unbeatable backdrop.

Business Travel Tip #10: Get a Nexus

If you find yourself traveling in and out of the US for business often, do yourself a huge <g class="gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="5" data-gr-id="5">favour</g> and get a Nexus Card. At just $50 for a five-year membership, this little beauty allows you to skip the lines and breeze through separate security screening dedicated to Nexus carriers.

There are many “tips and tricks” for keeping a home and office organized but most of them are filled with fluff that looks pretty but doesn’t necessarily help keep things organized. This list is for the person who wants practical advice on how to get organized and stay organized. Let’s dive right in!

Eliminate excess

This is so key!! There is no point organizing things that a) you don’t need or use or b) don’t have room for. So step one is to get a giant garbage bag or empty box and decide what stays and what goes.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when trying to decide:

Have I worn this in the last 6 months?

In another 6 months will I care about this thing?

What does this do?

Who’s is this?

If the answer to any of these questions is “no” or “I don’t know”… see you later, it goes!

OK, get crackin’, I’ll wait… I’m serious, go eliminate the excess stuff weighing you down right now. Work your way through every room until you’re done.

See, that wasn’t as painful as you thought it would be, was it? I bet it actually feels good to get rid of some of that stuff that was lurking in the recesses of your closets and cupboards.

Organize like things

OK, now take all the things that are left and put like things together. In an office space this is pretty easy. Put all the pens, pencils, highlighters, and markers together, put all the post-its together, all the envelopes, all the tools like hole punches, staples, etc. This will make it a lot easier down the road when you need a pen and know all the pens in the house are in the left drawer of your desk. No more checking 101 places before writing it on the mirror in lipstick.

Again, go through every room in the house and repeat this process.

Use opaque containers

This is the part where you get to be creative and let your inner interior decorator free. So, get on Pinterest and start collecting some inspiration on container ideas for your collections of like things that need a home.

One huge thing to keep in mind with these containers: make sure they are closed and not see-through. Although it looks really pretty to have glass everything let’s be honest, a month or two into the process of staying organized and the pens are going to be thrown into the pens container willy-nilly. They aren’t going to be nicely placed according to shape and size with all the nibs at the same end. Trust me, closed containers are your friend.

Labels

You might be thinking, “But how will I know what’s in all my nice, new, matching containers if I can’t see inside them?” This is where you’re going to become new best friends with labels. Labels come in so many beautiful options: craft paper, twine, ribbon, chalk board. The possibilities are endless.

Everything in its place

The biggest take away from this should be everything has its place and it goes back to that place after being used. If it doesn’t have a place to live then go back to step 1 and decide if you really need it to begin with. If it has a place but you never put it back figure out if that’s because the place is wrong or you need to change your mindset and just plain clean up after yourself.

There are always exceptions to every rule. In this case there are two exceptions to the organization rules that will help you stay organized.

Command centre

A command centre is a central station where you put your daily items like keys, cell phone, spare change. It also houses things that help the household run smoothly like a calendar of everyone’s schedule. This is not a dumping ground for everything you can’t be bothered to put away. It’s only for those things that are used so frequently they don’t need a place away on a shelf.

Quick draw desk spot

This spot is ideal for a desk or workstation. It houses one of everything that you need when working at your desk on a daily basis: pen, pencil, eraser, highlighter, paper clip, post-it pad. This will save you time opening and closing your drawers 100 times a day for the same pen.

By using these five tips for organization, and the two exceptions to the rule, you will have a more organized and efficient house and office space. The key is sticking to it. If you can follow these steps and stick to them you will be in organized bliss.

It can be daunting to move to a new city. The stress of getting all your stuff there, being comfortable in your new dream home, and most of all fitting in with the culture can be overwhelming. We’ve got your back! We’ve come up with five Calgary-isms every new Calgarian should know.

Chinooks are your friend

The folk-etymology of the word Chinook means “ice-eater” which is no surprise considering it often causes any present snow to melt (much to the delight of Calgarians). A new Calgarian can spot a Chinook by it’s signature cloud arch which will often seem to reach across the entire sky. But watch out because it is also known to cause a spike in migraine occurrences so stock up on some Advil!

Ginger beef was invented in Calgary

There are many cities and chefs that claim to have invented ginger beef but it is most widely accepted that the true origin of the dish is none other than Calgary. The dish is said to have been developed during the mid-1970s by chef George Wong at the Silver Inn in Calgary. The dish has become a staple of Chinese take-out in Calgary and across Canada. The CBC Radio One program The Main Ingredient even featured it in one of their radio segments.

The Caesar (the cocktail) was also invented in Calgary

This Calgary favourite is typically a mixture of vodka, clamato juice (a mix of tomato juice and clam broth), hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce, served in a glass rimmed with celery salt and garnished with a celery stalk and lime. It was invented in 1969 by restauranteur Walter Chell at what is now the Westin Hotel. If you’ve never had one you are missing out!

It is acceptable to drink a slurpee in any season

It’s no secret that Calgarian’s like their slurpees (slushies for those not in the know), as do many people, on a hot summer day. What can catch a new Calgarian off-guard is seeing a true blood Calgarian, slurpee in mitted hand while huffing through a blizzard! That’s right, Calgarians will treat themselves to a slurpee in any and all weather. It is truly an all-season drink.

It’s pronounced Cal-grie, not Cal-gar-ie

If you want to truly fit in with the native Calgarians you must be able to talk like them. A native will spot you a mile away if you pronounce it as the three-syllabled Cal-gar-ie. True Calgarians always drop the extra syllable and pronounce it Cal-grie.

Now that you know how to talk and eat like a Calgarian you’re going to fit right in!

When you stay in Downtown Calgary, all the very best the city has to offer is simply a short walk, pedal, or drive away. With so many options to get you from A to B, getting around Downtown has never been easier. From public transit to picturesque pathways, and everything in between, Calgary offers a whole host of ways to explore the city…

Walk

A city that was made for pedestrians, Downtown Calgary not only boasts the iconic Plus 15 pedestrian system, but it is also home to the largest network of walkways and pathways in North America.

The Plus 15 stands 15 feet above street level, hence its clever name. Spanning over 16 kilometres and 50 blocks, the Plus 15 is a fully enclosed, climate-controlled network of walkways which offer a convenient and comfortable walk between shopping centres, businesses, and parking lots all year round – especially during the bitterly cold winter months! Navigating the Plus 15 network can seem a little daunting at first, but there are plenty of maps along the way to help guide you throughout the Downtown core.

During the warmer months, pedestrians can get some fresh air and enjoy Calgary’s extensive collection of well-kept walkways and pathways, including the popular Prince’s Island Park. This urban park is the perfect green escape from the hustle and bustle of Downtown, offering multiple pathways throughout the park and along the Bow River. When you book your stay in Calgary with Urban Suites, you’ll enjoy the convenience of the Bow River pathways right on your doorstep – only a 1-minute walk from your apartment.

Ride

For those who prefer to see the city on two wheels, there are a number of well-maintained bikeways devoted to giving cyclists a smooth and scenic ride around Downtown. All areas of the city are connected by one of the most extensive bikeway networks in North America, and there are also separated cycle tracks to make navigating through Downtown traffic a lot safer. You can check out the complete map of Calgary’s bike path network here.

Park

There’s no doubt that finding a park in the city can be painful, but Calgary has its very own interactive parking app to make parking in Downtown that little bit easier. Simply enter your destination into the map, and the app will highlight all of your closest parking options. Not only that, but the app can also help you find a parking spot for every budget, over 3,000 free weekend spots, and a greater selection of long and short-term spots. The Calgary Parking Authority also offers free street parking after 6pm Monday to Saturday, and all day on Sundays and holidays.

Transit

Calgary is home to a quick, easy, and extremely efficient public transit system that makes travelling to, from, and around Downtown a breeze. The light rail C-Train is the city’s most popular transit method, operating on two lines, North and South. The Downtown section of the C-Train, which travels along 7 Avenue, is considered to be the ‘fare free zone’, so you can ride for free if you are travelling between the 10th Street and City Hall Stations. If you are continuing to ride the C-Train outside of the Downtown area, you must purchase a fare and carry your proof of payment with you. Urban Suites apartments are all conveniently located within a short walking distance of transit stops. Find your closest stop on Calgary’s public transit map.

Taxi

When your legs are too tired to walk any further, it’s easy to grab a cab in Downtown Calgary. Taxis run all over the city and can be flagged down on the street, or you can find a designated taxi stop zone. The main taxi stops in Calgary can be found outside of the major hotels, such as the Marriott, Hyatt and Westin, or on Stephen Avenue in front of key nightlife hotspots. The most commonly used taxi companies in Calgary are Checker Yellow Cabs and Associated Cabs.

Uber

Getting around Downtown via Uber has become extremely popular, as it offers a more personalized, reliable, and, often, a more cost-effective service than traditional public transport or taxis. Catching a ride with Uber is as easy as opening the app on your phone and requesting a ride from a nearby car. There are usually plenty of Uber cars available in the Downtown area, especially during peak hours.

Fort Calgary is a beautifully scenic spot, which tells the story of the people who developed the surrounding area. While Fort Calgary is dog-friendly, dogs must stay on their leash while in the grounds and are not permitted in any of the buildings.

One Night Stan’s unassuming bar and divery has always been home to good tunes, good food, good brews, and good times. Now, with its dog-friendly patio, One Night Stan’s is also receiving rave reviews from pet owners all over the city. This laidback and low-key venue is the perfect spot to take your pooch for some sunny afternoon patio drinks.

Coming to Stampede? Stay in Downtown Calgary for front row seats to this year’s wildest events and attractions!

Dust off your Stetson and kick up your cowboy boots, Calgary Stampede is headed back to town from July 6 to 15. This huge rodeo-slash-festival takes over Calgary each year with non-stop music, wild entertainment, weird and wonderful food, and all things Western.

Kick off your Stampede at the parade

Whether you’re a Stampede veteran or a first-timer, the famous kick-off parade is a time-honoured tradition not to be missed. On the first morning of Stampede, the 2.5-mile parade signals the start of all the fun with floats, horses, marching bands, dancers, and more. This year, the parade will begin on 9th Avenue in Downtown, and loop around to end on 6th Avenue.

Rodeo Round Up

Throughout the 10-day festival, over 100 of the world’s best cowboys, cowgirls and animals will face off in a daring display of skill and grit. Every afternoon at the Grandstand Infield, the thrilling rodeo event has Stampede goers on the edge of their seats, and competitors racing towards their place in Showdown Sunday – Rodeo’s Richest Afternoon.

The derby, dancing & death-defying stunts

Every night at 7:45 PM, the show-stopping Calgary Stampede Evening Show draws the masses into the Grandstand Arena for a massive entertainment doubleheader. The event begins with the rollicking GMC Rangeland Derby, where chuckwagon drivers furiously race around the arena. Once the last wagon has thundered over the finish line, the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show fires up the crowd with songs, dances, breathtaking acrobatics, and an extravagant fireworks finale.

Live & loud

From country crooners, to rock legends, to rising stars, the Calgary Stampede stages are graced with an insane amount of musical talent every year. At the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Virgin Mobile Stampede Concert Series includes country stars, Luke Bryan and Brad Paisley. The Coca-Cola Stage will be home to a huge line-up of international headliners, including Alexisonfire, Sheryl Crow, Broken Social Scene, Phantogram, Daniel Caesar, The Rural Alberta Advantage, and many more. The legendary Nashville North is the place to party in true country style, with the likes of Gord Bamford, Meghan Patrick, The Road Hammers, The Washboard Union, and more on stage. As always, the 5-time world champion Calgary Stampede Showband are ready to entertain each day, and the 38th Annual Stampede Talent Search is on the hunt for the stars of tomorrow.

Thrills & Spills

If you think Stampede’s rodeo is a wild ride, then just wait until you check out the Thrill Zone! This high-octane area is certainly not for the faint-hearted, with unruly rollercoasters, the freewheeling Skyscraper, and the catapulting Slingshot. You can also try your hand at driving your very own chuckwagon at the GMC Green Screen VR Booth, or test your mettle in rock-climbing, paintballing, and axe-throwing.

Let the feast begin

It’s not Stampede if you don’t start your day with some delicious pancakes – oh, and did we mention they’re FREE?! A tasty tradition for more than 85 years, every morning a team of volunteers put on the famous Stampede Breakfast in various locations across Downtown. From heat to sweet, from wacky to wow, Calgary Stampede is a culinary wonderland full of unique foods and jaw-dropping flavours. With a veritable bounty of food trucks and booths to choose from, you can easily eat your way through the entire 10-day festival. The Midway is undoubtedly the home of Stampede’s most imaginative menus, including such bizarre bites as Deep-Fried Wine and Cheese, Sushi Doughnut, Smoking Charcoal Ice Cream, 2-Foot Mini Doughnut Tower, and even a Cricket Grilled Cheese!

Of course, the best way to experience Stampede is to stay in Downtown Calgary, where you’ll be at the heart of the action in town, and only a short C-Train ride away from the Stampede Grounds. During Stampede, the C-Train conveniently runs 24-hour service, so you never have to worry about getting around the city.

Ready to find your perfect Stampede base-camp? Urban Suites have got you covered! With a number of short-term rental apartments centrally located in Downtown and just steps from public transport, Urban Suites boast the very best of Stampede just outside your door.

So, you’ve picked your destination. You’ve booked your flights. Now it’s time to decide on a place to call home during your vacation. Whether you’re staying for a couple of nights or a couple of months, there are a lot of benefits to choosing short term apartment rentals over hotels.

Save Your Pennies

While renting a whole apartment may sound expensive, it is often actually a lot more cost-effective than a hotel! Short term apartment rentals don’t have all the usual overheads that hotels have, so they are able to keep operation costs and rental fees down. Where hotels have rigid pricing structures, apartment rentals have the flexibility to work with their guests’ budgets – especially on longer term stays. Not only that, short term apartment rentals also provide you with your very own kitchen to cook up a storm! You’ll be surprised how much money you can save by not dining out for every meal.

Make Yourself At Home

Serviced apartment rentals offer the freedom, privacy and comfort of home-style living, with the added bonus of hotel luxuries, such as wifi, regular cleaning, and linen services. Having a space that’s totally your own will make you feel much more at home than in an impersonal hotel room surrounded by other travelers. Short term apartment rentals, like the ones offered on Urban Suites, are set up just like your own home with a fully-equipped kitchen, full-sized bathroom, and the convenience of a washer/dryer. This certainly makes keeping your routine while on the road much easier.

Get Some Space

When it comes to offering the most space, apartment rentals definitely win out this category. Where the average hotel may be one-bedroom or studio style, apartment rentals offer multiple rooms, including living area, kitchen and bathroom, as well as separate bedrooms for extra privacy.

Live Like A Local

Perhaps one of the most rewarding benefits of short and long term apartment rentals is that they give you the chance to experience life like a real local in the area. Usually positioned in an authentic local neighbourhood, you can get a taste of the genuine culture and vibe of the city you’re visiting – rather than feeling like just another tourist. Most apartment rentals will offer a concierge service too; your very own local source of insider info!

Want to enjoy all the comforts of home while on your next visit to Calgary? Check out Urban Suites. Renting nightly, weekly, or monthly, these stylish Downtown suites will have you feeling right at home.

Whether it’s experiencing all of nature’s splendour in the great outdoors, or heading inside to sip on a drink or enjoy a museum, nearby Rocky Mountains destinations have no shortage of things to do. The best part – you can get there in about an hour from any of our executive suites!

The Rocky Mountains are undisputedly are one of Alberta’s greatest treasures, and here you can golf, hike, bike, walk, canoe and kayak or even try your hand at horseback riding in the summer; or ski, snowboard, snowshoe among other activities in the winter. Whether you are a guest with Urban Suites in town on business or pleasure, your stay can further be enhanced with the plethora of nearby alpine activities!

Provincial Park and Rocky Mountain destinations such as Canmore and Banff not only offer an abundance of natural beauty and activity, but also history.

Canmore

Canmore, about 45 mins west of Calgary is a great day trip escape from the City. Surrounded by the Rockies, explore many of the local trails such as those found at Grassi Lakes and the Nordic Centre. If you are feeling extra adventurous try a natural history, guided cave tour through Rat’s Nest Cave: a wild, undeveloped cave under Grotto Mountain near Banff and Canmore. This expedition is in not for the claustrophobic, as the caves can be very narrow – oh and there is no interior lighting, no hand railings, and no developed walkways. It is a cave in its natural state.

After a day of play in Canmore you can kick back a one of the many local pubs, or fine restaurants or stroll down mainstreet and peruse the many specialty gift shops.
